Philip O'Reilly(Click an image to see a larger version) Philip's AA2A project involves him working across two faculties at the Bolton Institute, Lancashire; in Technology (Textiles) and in Visual Arts (Textiles and Surface Design). The 'Automatex' needleloom he needs for his work is 'high-end' technology and if the Bolton machine were not available the nearest facility to rent would be in Southern Norway. "My aim during the AA2A scheme is to make a large felt wallhanging for a specific venue. The painting 'Kum-Kum Kolam 4' shows the visual theme for the work. It uses imagery derived from Tamil text and alphabets. I am not interested in merely copying the painting but to use it as a catalyst for the wallhanging idea. I have made a large life-size drawing for the new work. "I work a five day week, every other week to justify the long journey from London and the elaborate movement of my work, materials, etc. I have been made to feel very welcome at Bolton.... everything I have asked for, I have received along with many helpful suggestions and advice from staff and technicians. I met everyone in both faculties, joined the library, have internet access and, most importantly, a place to work and store my tools and materials. "I have even been offered paid work at the Institute. I have done a lecture and a demonstration of two felting techniques, which staff or students were previously unaware of. I was also paid to do a tutorial which helps to cover my living expenses whilst I am on site. "The latest invitation has been from Professor Subhash Anand, Director of Research, to be a guest speaker at the Faculty of Technology Research Forum. "I like your work Philip because you have a completely mad use of our technology, it's wonderful". Should I be pleased about this concept of me, I asked myself? I was amused though, all the same! And it does suggest I am bringing new ways of thinking into the department. "I feel I am making a useful contribution to the courses and the students are slowly getting more curious about me and what I am doing."
To see more of Philip's work: A public workshop/demonstration will be held on 9 June; 10:00am - 12:30 pm. For experienced textile practitioners and bona-fide students 1:30 - 4:30 pm.
