'The scheme came along at a critical time for me in my work and has given me the kick-start I needed.'

After seeing the project in Artist's Newsletter, photographer Debby Besford used the time offered by Norwich's AA2A scheme to work on two ongoing projects. 'The first is called 'places' [see 'Stateline' and 'Palm Tree Cafe'] - a series of photographs taken over a period of time in Las Vegas and UK seaside towns. 'Each place has a temporary structure which mimics its surrounding. The places I have photographed are significant in that they have a powerful presence and are thought provoking.'

'The second part of my project which is also ongoing in its nature is about childhood and memory [inc. 'Birthday Party'].' Although not initially intended for this purpose, this set of images have subsequently been turned into a series of greetings cards as a response to people wanting to purchase them.

After graduating in documentary photography 1988, I went on to do a post-graduate in photography and media at Bournemouth & Poole College of Art & Design. Since 1991 I have been a freelance photographer and part-time lecturer. 'The scheme gave me several important things at a critical time in my work: the space and facilities to carry out my work. A working environment to focus my ideas and generate new ones.'

My work seems to take two paths. One is to make a living out of photography and the other is emotive. I have invested a lot of energy and time exploring new ways of working with digital imaging, which has had a positive impact on my work. I have won various bursaries and photography awards to travel to other countries and photograph very intimate and sensitive issues concerning people and their lives.

My work has been published in national newspapers and magazines and I have had a number of national touring exhibitions. I am interested in new technology and am learning many new and relevant skills. I have challenged and integrated these new skills into my commercial and personal work.
