Wally Gilbert

Drawing has always been the basis of my work, serving a functional purpose in the process of observation, design and presentation. Printmaking is a process and medium that allows my drawing to become the end rather than the means to an end. I have had an interest in Printmaking since I was first at College when I hesitated at Foundation level between Print and Sculpture as options for further study.

I originally went to Herefordshire College intending to work at etching and aquatints but became interested first in screen printing in textiles and then in IT both of which were new to me. This experience has opened up a new world of possibilities. I cannot obviously achieve the quality in digital printing of an etching press but amply compensating for this is the versatility, flexibility and the ability to use home printers and larger scale commercial printers. This has been a very valuable and interesting experience for me, and one that I look forward to continuing to develop.

During the AA2A scheme I produced a series of 'Angel' prints, based on a title 'Who are we anyway'; they have something of an identity crisis.
