Ruth Scott
My artwork explores the notion of absence and presence referencing the human body and the trace it so often leaves. The relationship between my own body and the space it inhabits is defined through the use of various media including video, installation and performance. I have often used technology to amplify the raw signification of the mark. In drawing performance ‘ Blacking’(2008) the audience arrives on the monitors after having been attracted to explore an antechamber by the amplified sound of chalk and graphite on a brick surface.
During my time at NTU I shall embark on an investigatative process which can facilitate the development of new work which will continue to investigate the body in space. I hope to work with sound on a level which can be disseminated from the videos and performances, but which will also feed and work with these components of my work.
The use of drawing and markmaking is very important to my work and I would like to research other means of expressing the mark itself. The printmaking facilities are another area I would like to explore as an alternative medium to create a specific mark on a surface. Ultimately I will return to examine the notion of the body and the marks, traces and sounds it produces.
