Roslyn Vallejo

Most of my work is made on paper. The decision to work on paper is because of its material qualities, status, and quotidian nature. I use simple understated ‘found’ images because of their inherent material qualities, whether disposable, pre-existing, coloured, varied, static, recognisable...

The scenes composed are inspired by images from the past; paintings by the old masters depicting allegorical imagery, and the ubiquity of modern advertising. At final composition, they take on the same qualities as a film still. They represent something that is remembered at a point in a story or that is fleeting and forgotten. I like the viewer to take on the role of a witness.

My current research explores constructing images using separate sourced images from omnipresent advertisments in magazines, left and discarded, that has power and effect over the condition of identity. These separate images that have been cut out, pasted together and re-staged can then be transformed further through printmaking and drawing methods.

I have recently undergone training in Acrylic Resist Etching & Digital/Photopolymer etching at Edinburgh Printmakers in Scotland. This has been an invaluble opportunity to work closely with experts in safer and environmently friendly printmaking methods and techniques. However, I believe it is necessary to take these new techniques, discover them and further my own research. This opportunity will give me an outlet and facilities to continue my ongoing learning.

This opportunity will enable me to develop my work by combining what already exsists in my practice - montages, acrylic resist etching and refief printing - with screen printing. As I am able to work on my montage assemblages anywhere, access to screen printing equipment and facilities will enhance my: research, portfolio, artistic practice, knowledge and experience. This scheme, I believe, will be of immeasurable benefit and value to me and my practice, ongoing learning and the future of my career.
