Peter Matthews

I graduated with my MA in fine art from NTU in 2003. I took off to southern Mexico in Sept. 2005 to work as an EAP teacher at a university on the Pacific Coast to get some real life experience of working with HE students.

Two and half years later here I am. Now over the road, literally, in the Maudslay building lecturing on the foundation art/design course. We all have experiences that change us.

I have this simple vision in mind you see. To simply walk around the studios as an observant, inquisitive artist. I could make miles and miles of tracks over the 50 hours that I hope to rack up within the studios, with the students. I want to talk the students. As it is. Simply to meet and talk to as many students as possible so can build up my critical knowledge and language about what is happening right now in Fine Art.

In terms of the art projects, I have some incredible ideas I want to explore. One for instance, Ships In The Night, is a moving image film with two ships sailing in opposite directions across the empty ocean. Eventually they cross, but as soon as they do, they separate again. BBC Shipping News sound inserts will be added. In a contemporary art sense, it explores many areas of how, in this day and age, we are all separated and disparate. Facebook doesn't really unite us in my opinion. It strikes a rift between what once was but cannot be anymore. Two other new sculpture ideas are keeping me up each night waiting to be tapped into.

Lots of ideas. To open the box of chocolates and see what Forrest Gump really meant.
