Northumbria University 2009/2010
Natalie Frost
Natalie Frost works loosely in the medium of print and the multiple, producing pieces in Braille, lazer-cut vinyl, neon, and screen-print. Materials and visual content are sourced from familiar mass published/printed items such as public information documents, branding, currency and wallpaper.
Looking increasingly at text and the boundaries of what we define and recognise as language, her work responds to current affairs examining issues of threat and power.
“I would like to use my time at Northumbria to continue my research into issues of perceived threat, developing a body of work conveying notions surrounding existing public information documents. I am currently working with the Preparing for Emergencies publication issued to warn of menaces including terrorism. I will also look at documents advising on pandemic measures and continue my work with final demand bills. The work I will investigate will be primarily screen-print based. I will work with interpreters to develop the content of the work and my print-studio research will determine how this content is presented.
Printmaking processes have become a conceptual starting point for much of my work. I hope to develop this area of my practice whilst at Northumbria
The opportunity to create a structured programme for myself working at Northumbria’s print facility will naturally offer the practical facilities required for production, but furthermore I hope to gain a critical input from the environment, students and staff I will work alongside.
