Mohammed Fakruzzaman

Mohammed Fakruzzaman has been painting for the last 30 years originally in a small house in Sylhet, Bangladesh where he was born and raised. In 1999 he was awarded his BA in Painting and Printmaking from the Sir John Cass Department of Arts at London Guildhall University and went on to win the 2000 UK National Award from the World-Wide Millennium Painting Competition, and was Artist in Residence at the London Metropolitan University.

A collagraph gives the artist great freedom to create a unique and complex surface for printmaking. The rich texture on the two plates used to make this print were created with carborundum paper and PVA on hardboard, combining dry brushwork with marks cut with a knife. The use of the two plates, in raw sienna, and ivory black, which vary tonally from mid to light to dark, help to generate a real sense of open space. The eye is led through the sweeping horizontal shapes in black, to the up and down in the foreground. The artist speaks of the 'remembered landscape' of his work.
