Lucy Anne Payne

As fashion continues to go round in circles, I find myself looking to the past, present and future for inspiration. The 1920s have always served as a significant influence for me as it was an era of both elegance and exuberance.

This range is not so much about looking at the textiles of the twenties but the graphics- mainly that of advertising and packaging. It is a focus on the bold composition and wonderful use of colour of that era, reminding many of the wonders of richness and luxury that we have almost forgotten within the modern world.

I see the importance of design as being not only about the people or market I am creating for, but also about that person creating it. I do look to trend forecasts but prefer not to be influenced by them as I find that every season there is a multitude of different looks that trends almost don’t actually exist.

As a freelance designer, the AA2A scheme has given me the fantastic opportunity to work on my own range of surface textile designs with screen printing and Herefordshire College of Art and Design offers great facilities for such methods of working. It is great that I could be in an environment where there is such a variety of work going on around you that one can’t help but feel inspired as well as knowing that others are being inspired by you.
