University Centre Doncaster   2008/2009

Kate Sully

I want to make new work exploring images from the world be it microscopic, viral or medical and which will become the centre of sculptural pieces involving wood/textile materials. These works will play with the idea of nuture and protection of our world as the inner imagery will be housed in a variety of media giving the appearance of flower like structures on the wall and floor. Also through the college I can access knitting machines to generate lengths of yarn which will become part of All Wrapped Up wall based sculptures incorporating the idea of warmth and protection whilst also suggesting ultimate damage. As I explore how to direct these ideas through the materials available to me as having access to new techniques in photography and textiles will allow my work to change and grow as in the work produced.

Being generally bound to my studio practice and limited options unless bought in, being at Doncaster gives me these new possibilities with materials/ideas and a focus to the work. I feel it would be interesting to the students to see mixed media work being developed at Doncaster and how ideas can direct the materials used to give them the greatest clarity to the audience.

I want to develop these flower like structures using photographic/mixed media approaches to exhibit next year to develop my technical and artistic ability through this help.

After leaving AA2A I have successfully created lots of new work in particular Pretty Maids all in a Row, a mixed media solo exhibition for 20-21 Visual Arts centre in Scunthorpe and will also be shown at Rotherham Art Gallery next March with other new work.
