TITLE: Inventiveness, Whimsicality and the ridiculous. (Research in to play in the nature of sculpture.)

AIMS: To establish a significant body of work over a period of practical research relating to the title and concerns expanded upon in the proposed plan.

To experiment and explore the relationship between art object, its environment and the viewer, aiming to increase the viewer’s awareness of that dialogue.

To explore the artist/student relationship and the benefits of it to those involved.

I would like to use workshop facilities for making sculpture of various sizes and using a range of materials- wood, steel, card etc to compile a body of work that reference an exploration of structure, scale and mishap. By pieces not quite fitting together in any logical practical order, they try to infer a sense that at any one stage, they are in the process of construction or destruction, of a thing that can never be realised.

I graduated from the Royal Academy 2 years ago and have since been working full time as a Studio Assistant to Sir Anthony Caro, making and restoring his work. This experience has been invaluable and has given me a great insight into the technical and practical skills of being a sculptor in today’s society.

AA2A would provide me with the opportunity to use workshop facilities that would not otherwise be available to me, and that as a sculptor, are invaluable for making certain work. It would also allow me an allocated time to focus on my own work and put into practice many of the skills that I have been learning.

The environment at Camberwell would accelerate my development at a far greater rate and at a much higher level than I would predict if I was working outside of it.
