Janet Manogue
My original intention was to make a series of small (A6) fine art prints on paper contained within several artist books, with a series of twelve larger prints for framing. As I worked, the project became process led and the work took over, changing shape and format. I made the works in series, all the while thinking about the layering, the texture and the colours.
My interest in cooking and baking informed the way in which I made this series of prints. I discovered that I couldn’t make the work unless I made the food first. I found myself drizzling ink like I drizzle cream and mars bar sauce and using colour, texture and line drawings to match textures, colours and shapes in the food.
The technicians were brilliant, always there to give advice and constructive criticism which improved my knowledge, understanding and technique. Working with the other artists on the scheme was lovely, we talked about our work, discussed the progress we were making and our newest ideas, and it really helped me to take my work forward.
I’ve gained a lot of confidence, experience and improved my practice. I’ve also come to realize that the work is what it is; sometimes what you want is not what happens, but serendipity can often be better!
I’ve really enjoyed my six months, made lovely friends and progress and would recommend other artists consider applying to the AA2A.
