University of Portsmouth 2008/2009
Gill Newton
A ‘jeweller in transition’ with the help of the AA2A scheme I have continued on a reflective personal research project that began in the summer of 2008; I withdrew my jewellery from exhibition smelted most of it and archived the rest to enable me to explore unfamiliar territory through drawing and making with found materials.
The focus of my research during the scheme has been mark making, drawing, making experimental pieces in porcelain paper clay and the exploration of printmaking processes.
Photographing my work in progress has heightened my visual awareness and enabled me to see the link between thought, mark and making. I believe this will be evident in future work whatever it’s nature, be it drawing, print, object or jewellery.
At the end of my time on the scheme at the University of Portsmouth I feel that I’ve achieved the aim of my AA2A proposal and leave with a series of experimental paintings, prints and ceramic pieces built on a strong foundation of drawing that indicate a future path for my art practice.
