Liverpool Community College 2007/2008
Emily Speed
The AA2A residency at Liverpool Community College has been a fantastic opportunity to meet other artists working in the city as well as staff and students at the college. Geoff Molyneux in particular, who has shown a real interest in all of the artists’ work and has been a great point of contact.
Unexpectedly, I have used the screen-printing and ceramics facilities at the college rather than the woodwork space as I originally proposed. I think it made more sense to make use of things that were otherwise unavailable to me. The college acted as quite a transitory working space and this had quite an effect on my work as I ended up working on various smaller projects concurrently, including several artist’s books and sculptural pieces. In addition to finishing some of the works begun at the community college, I have also begun working on a series of literary portraits. These will form another artist’s book, with hand-printed black and white photographs, each showing a sculptural portrait of a book, to be bound in a handmade, screen printed envelope casing.
The residency has led (both directly and indirectly) to a number of exhibitions in Liverpool during 2008, as well as meeting a kindred spirit in Elizabeth Willow, with whom I hope to collaborate in the future.
