Dulari Sumaria

My practice combines Eastern and Western thought and culture. I draw on ancient Indian mythology, Tantric tradition, Jain and Buddhist concepts of transcendence and Western art practice to explore metaphysical polarities of action and meditation. My work investigates rhythmic patterns of energy aroused by sound vibrations. With a silent non-conditioned mind, I respond to my work with full awareness of my body movements. I see this physical process of drawing as part of a spiritual quest; my drawings are a combination of energy, rhythm, movement and stillness of mind thus evoking unity of spirit and matter.

As part of the AA2A scheme I propose to use the printmaking process to further explore drawings through the monotype process with stencils, hand drawing and overlaying by using transparent and opaque inks. I will take inspiration from life movements within my surroundings to develop a related series of prints. The prints will manifest from drawings done in ‘real time’ by observing and recording an activity - where the observer and the participant merge.

In the process I aim to explore the relationship between drawing and printmaking whilst relishing the freedom of paint and colour.

My participation in the scheme will encourage a discussion on multi-cultural, multi- disciplinary artistic practice with the students.
