I approach my work from a background in Dance Theatre (Laban, 2004). I am interested in the combination of dance and large-scale puppetry, how to use the performer as both puppeteer and puppet and dancer.
Throughout the AA2A scheme I aim to explore design, the body and performance. I want to look specifically at where design and performance merge - using the starting point of how design on the body (puppetry, but also light, sound, video, animation) affects its movement (or our perception of its movement). I aim to use puppetry ideas to look at transformation, duality, perception and recognition.
I aim to collaborate with the students and undertake my own research and exploration, resulting in a series of sketches / short works. This exploration would involve design, construction, play, physical research, (re-design, re-construction!), devising, and performance, and would draw on puppetry, costume, lighting, sound, and media.
This opportunity would enable me to develop my work from a design viewpoint – my work essentially combines design and movement, although my base/training is in movement, so this is an ideal opportunity to approach my practise laterally! I am interested in learning from and giving to other areas – and am looking forward to broadening my influences, creating dialogue, and discussing ideas with artists from varying backgrounds and artforms.
