Hull School of Art and Design   2008/2009

Adele Howitt

At Hull School of Art and Design, I intend to produce a new series of works in clay for an exhibition entitled ‘Fabricate’, at Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery in March – May 2009. My main line of work is in the public realm, working with Architects and consulting with associated user groups to seamlessly incorporate art into everyday lives. I consider current issues, context and site specific information in the collaborations that I undertake - using a range of traditional or architectural materials and techniques for the majority of the public works. I have worked in many settings (schools, hospitals, building projects). Within the public work, I am interested in recording community identity through visual and participatory art.

Intertwined with this line of practice, I am interested in landscape as a documentation of time, history and identity. This informs my work in clay and I intend to expand this strand of my practice. I’m based in Hornsea, home to the historic collection of Hornsea pottery, and craft skills remain central to my practice. A discreet object from the collection at Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery is the point of research for new work. I intend to investigate the vessel as a form of landscape, time, and propaganda. The facilities at Hull School of Art and Design and, more importantly, being part of this creative community and exchange of ideas, will be a great support.
