Central St MartinsStephen WalterMy work is mainly concerned with Romantic ideas of landscape and beauty, with an underlying ambivalence concerning the loss of natural wilderness given up for human purpose. It ranges from print, drawing, painting, photography and digital media. A current series of photographic silkscreens are based upon landscapes viewed through windows, blurring the exterior and producing a distinct area in between the beholder and the view outside. Reproducing the photographs through four part color separations, allows me to introduce handmade marks before, in between and after the four layers of printing. There by producing an arena in which I can leave my mark and grapple with the dilema of actualising thoughts and dreams and blending them inside a version of the outside world. I am currently working on Bus Window in the printmaking department at Central Saint Martins (within the AA2A Artist Access Program), which is an addition to this series. The CMYUK series is also work in progress and involves ideas of symbolism, nationality, the blurring of traditions and the glossing over and presentation of a national ensign. Contact:
