I applied to the AA2A scheme in order to learn techniques that would help me to develop my work in new directions.
I see the pieces that I have produced during the time spent in the workshops as work in progress, a step towards my ultimate goal of making large pieces of sculpture that would be placed out of doors. Although I did not have a specific exhibition to work towards I set myself a brief: to produce a series of female figures that represented the four elements and myths connected to those elements, four dangerous women.
My aim was to learn new metalwork techniques to build the sculptures and also to learn machine knitting. Most of the time in the workshops was taking up with learning to gas weld but I managed some time in the textiles workshop with the knitting machines.
The time spent in the college has been invaluable to me, not only in the use of the workshops but also for the chance to network with other artists and students. I feel that this opportunity has been the first step on a new phase in my career as an artist.
