Paintings for me are records of life. Records of emotion, places, memory, desire, the personal. Memory of emotion inspired by a place. Memory of other artworks. Images of places I would wish to experience but never can. A never-ending desire for something more...
Trying to avoid; abstraction, which is too introverted, media images which are too prevalent, being trendy or fashionable which is shallow, painstaking detail which dominates the reading of the work, over analysing painting and its relevance which is neurotic and uninteresting. Avoiding process-based work and paintings with drips (especially when going the wrong way) which suggest the artist hasn't seen enough paintings. So attempting to make with more avoidance than influence. I am able to be derogatory about all of the above as I at some time have worked with these approaches.
