During my exploration of the aspects of transience, I spent time considering
the relationship between objects, people and nature. Our consciousness of
transience affects our emotions, embodying an awareness of our vulnerable and
precious existence. The nature of glass is an ideal metaphor for these feelings.
I feel drawn to its fragility and the sensuousness of the material - the way it
absorbs and reflects light, and the way that it casts shadows in its
environment.
With my glass sculpture I try to embody the idea of life as a series of
moments, through the fine glass rings, linked into fragile chains. The volume of
light within the sculpture is always slightly in motion, swayed by the
atmosphere around it.
The viewer may observe or contemplate the work through the filter of their own
memories, creating a momentary emotion such as excitement, anxiety or
nostalgia.
The glass sculpture is made by a combination of techniques - hot glass work and
kiln-forming. One of the technical discoveries in this work has been in the
flexibility of glass. This flexibility allows the rings to be linked to each
other without any extra fitting in the same way as a metal key-ring connection.
The individual rings are chained and hung from nylon threads to create the
sculpture.
